You heard it here first. Winter Weddings have A LOT going for them. While many couples choose to say “I do” in Spring and Summer, there are plenty of reasons why getting married in Winter is really cool (pun intended!)
For those planning a wedding on the East Coast of Australia during Winter, you’ll be happy to know that heavy rainfall is rare at this time of year, and you’re likely to have dry conditions. Plus, if you’re thinking of scooting off overseas for your honeymoon, it will be Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. How does drinking piña coladas by the pool while you’re working on your tan sound? From better availability with your preferred suppliers to beating the sweltering heat (your groomsmen will thank you), you’re sure to warm up to these 5 awesome advantages of getting married in Winter.
1. The Light is Better for Photography
While it might be hard to believe, the sunlight in Winter is actually better than the sunlight in Summer. June marks the beginning of the Winter Solstice, which is when the sun sits at its lowest point in the sky (not directly overhead) and with the least angle to Earth. This means the sunlight in Winter is much softer and far more flattering compared to Summer, when the sun can be harsh, creating unwanted shadows and squinting.
2. No Heat and No Humidity
You might be thinking, thanks, Captain Obvious, but it’s worth pointing out! Don’t get me wrong, one of the things I love about Australia is the heat in Summer, but it’s not always conducive to a comfortable wedding day. Especially if you’re planning a vineyard or countryside wedding far from a coastal sea breeze. Heat can be a contributing factor to hair and make-up mishaps, a hot and sweaty bridal party (especially during group photos), and it can be hard to keep your guests hydrated. If you’re stressed about being hot and sweaty for your wedding photos, Winter is the best time for you.
3. A Seamless Wedding Timeline
Another great reason to have a Winter wedding is the seamless timeline. Most couples will choose to have their ceremony between 2-3pm. This means there’s ample time between the ceremony concluding and the reception starting to get your bridal party group photos and your golden hour couple portraits. The sun is at its best an hour before sunset, and with sunset being at around 5pm in Winter, this timeline ensures you make the best use of the light. It also means that once we’ve finished these photos, you’re able to arrive at the reception and even grab a quick bite to eat or cocktail with your family and friends before it officially starts. After all, you invited them to spend time with them.
4. Better Availability with Your Preferred Suppliers
Winter in Australia is generally the low season for wedding vendors and venues. This means you have a better chance at securing your dream venue and working with the specific vendors whose work you’ve been saving to your Pinterest board long before you were engaged! You may also find that venues and vendors are offering special discounts during this time, and you could end up with some extra dollars in your back pocket.
5. Something for your friends and family to look forward to…
During the peak wedding season in Spring and Summer, you can feel like you have an event every weekend. And, even worse, you may end up with two weddings on the same day. Having a Winter wedding means your guests are more likely to be available and have a less hectic schedule. We all seem to hibernate in the cooler seasons, so a wedding gives your friends and family something to look forward to and the perfect excuse to celebrate.
